2013 NZIC Conference - 1-5 Dec

The planning for the 2013 NZIC conference to be held in Wellington is proceeding well. The subcommittee consisting of two representatives of VUW (Rob Keyzers [committee convenor], Matthias Lein [conference treasurer]), two from Callaghan Innovation (Tim Kemmitt, Ralf Schwoerer) and one from ESR (Wendy Popplewell) means that organisation of the conference won't be "university" dominated.

Date and Venue: The conference venue has been booked for Sunday Dec 1st to Thursday Dec 5th. The conference is to be held at VUW's Rutherford House campus (http://www.victoria.ac.nz/vicvenues/venues/index.aspx) with the assistance of VUW's conference team, Vic Venues. A tentative booking has also been made with VUW's Te Puni Village (http://www.tepunivillage.co.nz/) for delegate accommodation. Te Puni Village is situated on the Kelburn Campus and is therefore a 15 min walk through the city to the conference venue but buses downtown are frequent and the village provides a range of accommodation options and is very new.

Plenary Speakers: The six plenary speakers that have accepted our invitation to present are: Pieter Dorrestein (Scaggs Institute/UCSD; Analytical Chemistry), Ben Davis (Oxford; Organic Chemistry), Jim Watkins (U. Massachusetts; Materials/Industrial Chemistry), Tina Overton (Hull; Education), Jeff Tallon (Callaghan Innovation; Physical Chemistry), and Philip Power (University of California, Davis). The committee thought it would be good to have a formal plenary speaker for Chem Ed as this group is an important part of NZIC. As well as being as well known advocate for chemistry education in the UK (Tina is the RSC Education president) she is also a well known inorganic chemist and should have wide appeal to the conference delegates.
