MSc – Seaweed Bioactives for Native/Agriculture Plants

A fully funded MSc scholarship at the University of Waikato for a domestic student is currently available within the Entrepreneurial Universities Macroalgae Biotechnology programme. The scholarship will suit a student with an interest in the development of seaweed bioactive products for the control of plant diseases. The goal of this project is to isolate and identify bioactive molecules from seaweed(s) for the management of key disease causing pathogens in native/agriculture plant species. The research exploits known bioactivity trends in seaweeds. Identification of high efficacy bioactive molecules from seaweeds will drive decisions in seaweed aquaculture creating new industries and opportunities for NZ.

During the course of the project, the student will gain experience in extraction and fractionation of bioactive molecules from seaweed, industry standard chemical characterisation techniques, and bioactivity evaluation using biological assays.

Thus, the successful applicant will have a strong chemical background with an interest in plant disease control.

We are looking for a student to start at the beginning of 2021.
