Michael Edmonds
I am currently the manager of the Biomolecular Interaction Centre (BIC), a multidisciplinary research centre based at Te Whare Wānanga o Waitaha/University of Canterbury. BIC supports over 70 researchers across science and engineering in their exploration of all aspects of molecular interaction related to biological functions.
My chemistry background began with undergraduate, honours and PhD studies at Massey University in organic chemistry, followed by postdoctoral research in Finland and at the University of Canterbury in drug design and the synthesis of bioactive compounds. I then moved into the polytechnic sector for 20 years at Ara Institute of Canterbury, broadening my chemistry skills to include analytical and natural products before moving into management and leadership roles.
In 2020, I returned to university to complete a Masters in Organisation Psychology where my thesis focused on motivation, wellbeing and performance, after which I moved into my current role.
I previously served on the NZIC Executive in the early 2010s, serving as President in 2013. I bring to this role broad experience in, and a passion for, science education and helping students and wider society understand the value and importance of chemistry.
