The sciPAD Denis Hogan Award for Chemical Education recognises Suzanne Scourfield for her significant and sustained contribution to chemical education in New Zealand.
Suzanne is a founding member of SCENZ (Secondary Chemistry Educators of New Zealand). She served as the Secretary of the steering committee formed in 2017, leading to SCENZ’s establishment as a sub-branch, and now a full Division of the NZIC. This work provides a vital national voice and network for secondary chemistry teachers.
Suzanne is a committed mentor, actively supporting colleagues at a local and regional level. She mentors new teachers and encourages them to pursue leadership opportunities, thereby building capacity within the science education community.
As the Head of Science at Whangārei Girls’ High School, Suzanne brings over 20 years of experience as a highly skilled educator. She consistently enhances student engagement and academic performance through innovative teaching methods and supports local science fairs and curriculum development.
Through her long-standing commitment to her students, her generous support for her fellow educators, and her contribution to founding SCENZ, Suzanne has had a substantial impact on chemical education in New Zealand and is a fitting recipient of this award.
