Courtney Ruha
I am a professional teaching fellow in the School of Chemical Sciences at the University of Auckland, where I enjoy supporting students to develop both their confidence and curiosity in chemistry while providing an inclusive and engaging learning environment. I also work to engage with communities outside the University, sharing the excitement of chemistry with students, to inspire future pathways into science. I value the opportunity to support learners at all stages and grow their skills and knowledge, and to contribute to shaping the next generation of scientist. My PhD research focused on designing catalytic systems for green oxidation chemistry, to target and remove organic pollutants from wastewater.
Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my whānau, and my two young daughters, who keep me very busy.
I enjoy being a member (and past Wellington branch secretary) of the New Zealand Institute of Chemistry because it provides a welcoming space where people can come together to share ideas, build networks, and grow as part of a supportive scientific community. Through my involvement with organising student-focused events, I have seen firsthand the excitement and joy that chemistry can spark. It is especially rewarding to watch students connect with one another over their shared passion for chemistry, and to know that NZIC plays a key role in fostering those opportunities for collaboration and inspiration.
